DHFAQs

Q: What is this place? Why do I feel like I’m stoned?

A: Detritus Hall is just a collection of videos and links to help broaden the horizons of those interested in newer classical music, i.e., modernism and beyond. We provide resources to better understand where classical music was, is and is going (not that we particularly know, but it’s sure fun trying to find out). Conceived as a supplemental site to The Detritus Review, where we snarkily defend music from bad writing, Detritus Hall is more music and less talk (some snark, sometimes); it provides musical context.

If you feel your head is about to explode, we in no way assume responsibility; that is the fault of our collective unfamiliarity with this music. We are trying to correct that.

Q: Well no one asked us yet, but I’ll answer it anyway. About copyright and fair use: if you have a problem with our re-posting of your videos, drop us a line and we’ll gladly remove them. Otherwise, we’ll just assume that if we can embed the video, it falls under “fair use.” Additionally, we’ll try our best to acknowledge our sources, providing links to your YouTube channel, etc. Also, for links to mp3 downloads, we endeavor to link to only those recordings that are rare or out of print. If you feel our links are inappropriate, again, just drop us a line.

That said, we’d appreciate it if you viewed this site as a primer for further exploration into the genre and, as such, a conduit that points toward (promoting) your work, music, videos, etc. We do not seek benefits from this endeavor, monetary nor professional. We are just happy to responsibly share the music we love.

Q: Is there a direct correlation between the Review and the Hall?

A: Yes and no. If we feel we have the need to qualify our posts from the Review, for the sake of specific contextualization, we’ll do it here. Otherwise, the things we post here are things that we find interesting, illuminative, or just plain fun.

If there is something that you’d like to see here, or would like us to explore further, drop us a line and we’ll try to accommodate your requests. We’re kind of like DJs, in that respect.

Q: Are you guys strictly classical?

A: Is John Zorn strictly classical?

Q: How do I easily find things I'm looking for?

A: That's potentially a very abstract question. You may need to consult a Buddhist monk. However, if you're asking, "how do I find things on your site," then you should scroll down below the blogrolls (More Musical Detritus and Non-Musical Detritus). There, you'll find links to our previous posts via the composer. If you click on a composer, then all of the posts that feature that composer will magically appear.

*Please report broken links, if you should happen upon them. Because the interwide-tube-net-high-speeds is constantly changing, much of the content we post may disappear. We'd like it if it didn't, though. But, alas, it does. So, please help keep this site full of content and free from dead space. Thank you.

We’ll address more topics when the need arises. Happy listening!
